Visnums-Kil´s Trails

Beautiful nature, grazing animals ... walk by Lake Vänern.

Arskagsgsleden 5,6 km

The Visnums-Kils trails are characterised by a diverse landscape with pastures and knotty old oaks, lush forest, views over Lake Vänern and wonderful tranquillity. The Arskags trail begins from the reserve’s most southerly entrance and is circa 5.6 km.

The Arskags trail passes for the most part through landscape with grazing cattle. The animals are not dangerous but can be very curious, especially if you have a dog with you. Show consideration, it is the cattle that maintain the landscape and keep the terrain open.

At Sandudden headland the forest opens into a clearing and here there is a picnic table where you can take a break.

When you have continued the walk to the far south you come to the Arskags headland, an open meadow with views over the water. Here there is a wind-shield, fire-pit, picnic table and dry toilet. If you want to camp this is a suitable place. To the south Åråsviken bay opens out with its labyrinth of islands and reedbeds. Åråsviken is a part of Lake Vänern, Sweden’s largest lake.

In order to have a longer walk: follow the road circa 1 km to Nötö car park and combine with the Nötö trail (5.4 km), which gives you a walk of circa 13 km in total.

Please make sure that you have parked so that you do not block the road which continues on out towards the private summer cottage on the island.

Nötöleden 5,5 km

The Visnums-Kils trails are characterised by a diverse landscape with pastures and knotty old oaks, lush forest, views over Lake Vänern and wonderful tranquillity. The Nötö trail begins from the reserve’s middle entrance and is circa 5.5 km.

After a walk in the pine forest the trail passes through terrain that was previously grazed. In recent years there has been no grazing and here you can see what happens when the animals disappear. The previously open beach meadows by Västra Nötön are now overgrown with scrub. The aim is to eventually return the land to grazing. If there are any grazing animals they are not dangerous but can be very curious, especially if you have a dog with you. Show consideration. After 1.6 km walk you arrive at Hästudden headland, a picnic spot with fire-pit, picnic table and dry toilet and a lovely view over Lake Vänern. If you want to camp this is a suitable spot.

At the cabin Österöstugan there is a stove, dry toilet and picnic table. The walk continues

through deciduous forest on Öströn to eventually return to Västra Nötön via the trail you came on. The farm at Västra Nötön is privately owned, so please consider those who live here. If you would like a shorter walk you can cut back from Osteröstugan towards the trail to the car park which gives you a walk of circa 4.1 km.

To take a longer walk: follow the road circa

1 km to Nötö car park and combine with the Arskags trail (5.6 km), which gives you a walk of circa 13 km in total.

Prästöleden 5,6 km

The Visnums-Kils trails are characterised by a diverse landscape with pastures and knotty old oaks, lush forest, views over Lake Vänern and wonderful tranquillity. The Prästö trail begins from the reserve’s most northerly entrance and is circa 5.6 km.

The Prästö trail passes for the most part through countryside with grazing cattle. The animals are not dangerous but can be very curious, especially if you have a dog with you. Show consideration, it is the cattle that keep the landscape open. After about 700 m walk from the car park lies Linsöstugan, a rest cabin with dry toilet, fire-pit and picnic table. By all means take a break here, and leave the cabin in the condition you would like to find it. If you want to camp this is a suitable spot.

The trail continues through pastures and on an embankment over to Prästön’s deciduous forest. On the north headland of Prästön there is a small viewing tower where you get a fine view over Kilsviken bay. The last part of the path to the viewing tower is very stoney, so walk with care. All the way out on Prästudden you will come across a picnic spot on an open headland with a view over Lake Vänern. The little red cabin located here is privately owned.

If you walk from the car park, pass Linsöstugan, take the shortcut towards south Prästön, pass Prästudden headland and return on the western trail to the car park, it will be a walk of circa 4.3 km in length.
